Hello Mapleside Families,
The second week of school saw students diving deeper in geography with explorations of the three states of matter, learning how particles move and respond to changes in temperature, and finding details of the transition metals of the periodic table. Everyone received the second Great Lesson: The Coming of Life, which begins with a story about the balance of nature, and moves into a visual timeline based on the fossil record of the different types of life on Earth, from unicellular life in the ocean, to the the diversity of mammals on land. Our P.E. games this week focused on food chain concepts and community building, with the games Chicken, Fox, Snake and Move to My Island. After recreation time on Friday, the children were delighted to have some pancakes prepared by the senior students as an addition to their lunch, honouring Terry Fox’s tradition of eating big diner breakfasts before his daily runs during the Marathon of Hope. THIS SUNDAY! September 20 – Terry Fox Run and School Picnic
The children are overjoyed to have surpassed their team fundraising goal of $500, already raising over $1,000 to support cancer research. We thank you and your families for your generosity. It is wonderful to see the children, through the story of Terry Fox, recognize the value of hard work, find joy in helping others, and grow confidence in their ability to achieve their goals.
The Mapleside team will be meeting at 9:45 at the flag pole near the southern edge of the park by Lawrence Road, close to the parking lot and lawn bowling club. (#9 on the map of Gage Park included below). This is where the Terry Fox Run registration tent will be located. The Terry Fox Run has an open start time, with some groups opting to begin as early as 8:30, and with the run officially ending at 11:00 a.m. Please allow time to find alternate parking if the main parking lot should be full.
Families who wish to drop off personal items before the run can bring them to the picnic area we have reserved near the playground (#12) beside Gage Avenue. We will have a member of our school community available to mind our groups’ belongings while families are completing the 1.5 km. loop.
After the run, families are welcome to gather at our picnic area to relax, socialize, eat, and play. Each family should plan to bring their own meal, but we’ll have a table for any communal eats or treats donated to the group. Kids are welcome to bring their own sports equipment to use at the picnic.
Scholastic Book Orders
The students will occasionally receive Scholastic book flyers to encourage reading as a hobby outside of school. The flyers showcase new, seasonal, and popular items, with more books available online. When you place an order for Scholastic books and apply our classroom code RC144312, the class earns bonus bucks towards new books for the classroom library and literature circles, and your order ships to the school for free.
If you would like to be included in our September shipment, please submit your order online by Saturday, September 26. When the books arrive, we’ll send your child’s home with them. If you have any surprises in your order, please let us know, and we will notify you when it arrives and hold it for discreet pick-up. Happy reading!
